what you need to know about high blood pressure

how does hypertension affect my Kidneys?

If the kidneys are affected by high blood pressure, these symptoms may be present:

  • urinary tract infections
  • frequent urination
  • pain in your flank (low on side of abdomen)
  • protein or blood in urine
  • increased glucose (diabetes)

High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney failure. Every year, high blood pressure causes more than 25,000 new cases of kidney failure in the United States, according to a 2007 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report.

"In patients with diabetes, it's especially important to monitor their blood pressure because it so quickly affects their kidneys," Dr. Keith Ferdinand says.
