The Scoop on Sodium

By Marsha McCulloch, M.S., R.D.

If you have high blood pressure or just want to avoid it, read on to learn how to find and avoid hidden sodium.

Cutting sodium is a healthy move for almost anyone, but it’s hardly as simple as putting away your saltshaker.

“The larger problem is the unseen sodium that people aren’t aware they’re consuming in processed and restaurant foods,” says cardiologist J. James Rohack, M.D., president-elect of the American Medical Association.

Hidden sodium sources include:
• convenience foods
• oversize portions
• restaurant meals

This “hidden” sodium makes up more than 75 percent of the sodium we consume.
