The Scoop on Sodium

Restrictions for Food Manufacturers

Food manufacturers must follow certain definitions to advertise their products as lower in sodium or salt. Here are what some common claims mean:

Sodium free or salt free: Less than 5 mg of sodium per serving.

Low sodium: 140 mg or less of sodium per serving.

Reduced or less sodium: At least 25 percent less sodium as compared with a standard serving size of the regular food.

No salt added: No salt was added during processing. It does not necessarily mean sodium free, because a small amount of sodium occurs naturally in some foods. Many varieties of no-salt-added canned vegetables are sold in supermarkets.
