The Scoop on Sodium

How to Read Food Labels

Sodium is in more than just the foods you eat. Check out these offenders:

Medications: Many drugs have a sodium base to help them dissolve in your digestive tract. Read the label of any over-the-counter medications (especially antacids and pain relievers) and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Tap Water: The amount of sodium in tap water varies by location, so check with your local water department. Water softeners may add 7–220 mg per quart; ask your local health department where you can send a water sample for analysis. A filter on your tap or refrigerator water filters can help remove sodium.
