Atherosclerosis: The Enemy Within
The Heart: A Perfect Target
Because of its constant workload and need for blood, the heart is often the first place to show symptoms of atherosclerosis. Then it’s called coronary artery disease and, with exertion, manifests itself as chest pain, or angina.
But atherosclerosis is really a system-wide condition. If it’s found in the arteries in one part of your body, you also have it elsewhere.
Plaque buildup in the renal arteries can lead to kidney failure. A blockage in the carotid arteries—the main blood vessels to the brain—is called cerebrovascular disease. Atherosclerosis even plays a role in many cases of erectile dysfunction.
Peripheral Arterial Disease
An obstruction in the arteries to your arms or legs is called peripheral arterial disease. PAD occurs when narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your extremities, mostly your legs and pelvis. Many people who have been diagnosed with atherosclerosis also have PAD.
Most people realize they have PAD after experiencing painful cramps in their hips, thighs, or calves when walking or exercising. Early diagnosis and treatment is key in helping to prevent further damage.
