Cheerios and Cholesterol

MYTH: Eating a bowl of Cheerios every day can measurably reduce your cholesterol.

TRUTH: "If you want to eat Cheerios to lower your cholesterol, you have to do so consistently, add exercise, and maintain an overall healthy diet-then, eating Cheerios might drop your cholesterol levels a little bit," says Daniel Edmundowicz, M.D., director of preventive cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Cardiovascular Institute.

Howard Eisen, M.D., professor and chief in the division of cardiology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, agrees. "I think there's some benefit to eating Cheerios for breakfast," he says.

As with any high-fiber food, Cheerios bind the cholesterol so that your body eliminates it instead of absorbing it. "Cheerios fit into a multipronged approach to preventing heart disease. It's what I have for breakfast," Eisen says.
