Do I Need a Statin?

If any of these statements describe you, your doctor likely
would recommend taking a statin:

I’ve had a heart attack or stroke.

I have diabetes and my LDL level is above 70 mg/dL.

I have chronic kidney disease.

I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

My total cholesterol is 240 mg/dL or higher or LDL is 130 mg/dL or higher and I have two of the following
risk factors:

  • I am 50 or older.
  • I have a family history of heart disease.
  • I am obese or carry weight around my waist.
  • I have diabetes.
  • I smoke.
  • I do not exercise regularly.
  • I have high blood pressure.
