Statin Guide

Which Statin is Right for Me?

Your doctor will recommend a statin, in part, based on how many points your cholesterol needs to be reduced.

You need to reduce your number by 35–50 percent:
Your LDL cholesterol is 130–150 (normal is 100 or below), or 21–35 points over a recommended level of 70 for people with diabetes. These statins are suggested at these doses:
Atorvastatin (Lipitor) 20 mg or more
Lovastatin (generic for Mevacor) 80 mg
Rosuvastatin (Crestor) 10 mg or more
Simvastatin (generic for Zocor) 20 mg or more

You need more than 50 percent reduction:
Your LDL cholesterol is 150 or higher, or more than 35 points over the recommended level of 70 for people with diabetes). These statins are recommended:

Atorvastatin (Lipitor) 80 mg
Rosuvastatin (Crestor) 20 mg or more
