Heart-rate myth: high resting heart rate

Popular belief: A high resting heart rate is bad.

Reality: “A high resting heart rate may be genetic; some people have normal resting heart rates as high as 100,” Robert Otto, Ph.D., says.

Still, it is true that a higher-than-normal resting heart rate may be a red flag.

“Thyroid problems often only manifest with a higher-than-usual heart rate,” Martha Gulati, M.D., M.S., says. A high reading may indicate stress, disease, or infection. In athletes, a high resting heart rate may be a sign that they are overtraining.
