Couch Squats: Don't Just Sit, Get Fit

By Sheri Batterman-Azcona, Ph.D.

Fitness experts agree that squats are one of the best exercises you can perform because they strengthen the glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves all at the same time.

1. Stand in front of a sofa, with your feet facing forward, shoulder-width apart. Place your arms straight out in front of you.
2. Keep your knees behind your toes and bend at the knees and hips.
3. Lower yourself until your back end barely touches the sofa.
4. Hold for three seconds, then slowly return to the standing position.
5. Beginners should do one set of 12–15 repetitions three times per week.
