Ignite Your Fat Burners
By Doug Donaldson
Scientists can calculate the number of calories in a food by burning it in a device called a calorimeter. Calculate calories in bacon, for example, a slice is toasted well beyond crispy in a calorimeter, then its heat output is measured. That’s how your body consumes calories: by igniting the food and burning away the calories.
Just as a blowtorch burns more—and faster—than a butane lighter, a faster metabolism burns more calories than a slower one. One way to stoke your metabolism is through quick, intense workouts and moves that imitate everyday activities, says Robert Reames, author of Make Over Your Metabolism (Meredith Books, 2006). And the exercise will help you build more muscle, which helps turn up your inner heat to burn more calories. Reames, a certified personal trainer, shares three of his calorie-blasting workouts.
