Sodium 101: Shake the Salt Habit

A Look at Salt

There are a variety of salts available today. They can vary in texture and flavor.

Fine, granulated grains; commonly used in cooking and in saltshakers. Most table salt is iodized, which helps prevent goiter, a thyroid gland condition.
Coarse grains; adds a crunchy texture to dishes. Kosher salt often is used on the rim of margarita glasses and in the pickling process.
Fine or coarse grains; used in place of table salt. Evaporating ocean water results in sea salt. lt comes in a range of colors due to the trace amounts of minerals it contains.
They have 25–100 percent less sodium than table salt, contain potassium, and may have a bitter aftertaste.
Used as a flavorful, low-sodium substitute for table salt. It is a blend of salt, herbs, and spices and may include garlic powder, pepper, celery salt, or onion.
