Sex After a Heart Attack

What factors might delay my ability to have sex?

It depends on your medical condition—whether you’ve had a big or small myocardial infarction, and whether you’ve had angioplasty or open-heart surgery.

“Many patients do very well after modern heart-attack treatment, especially if they’ve had, as many do today, a cardiac catheterization, meaning the coronary blockage was found, opened up, and stabilized with a stent,’’ Neuberg says. “This restores good blood flow, healing a small attack fairly quickly.’’ Indeed, waiting for tender swelling near the catheterization point in the groin to heal may slow people for the few days needed.

But those who still have known blockages and blood flow problems after a heart attack should check with their doctor before resuming sexual activity.
