Eating right is only part of the equation. If you’ve talked yourself out of exercising because you think you have to join a gym, forget it. Simply put on some tennis shoes, preferably some with good support, head outside (or to the mall, if it’s cold outside), and walk.

If you don’t move, you might die prematurely, says Dr. Ro. The benefits of walking include reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, depression, and anxiety. Walking also may improve sleep and help with weight control.

When Dr. Ro was a child, her guardian, Rosetta, took her on long walks in the neighborhood to see the birds and smell the flowers. That exposure led to Dr. Ro’s lifelong love of walking—and helped her lose weight.

There’s no need to push yourself to the point of panting. A brisk walk has been proven effective in reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Thirty minutes of walking a day is recommended for at least five days each week. Check with your doctor before starting any diet or exercise plan.
