His & Her Open-Heart Surgery

Life After Heart Surgery

Recovering from heart surgery together made changing their diets a true team effort for Bob and Tina Buckley. Here are some of their tips.

  • Eat more fish, chicken, vegetables, and fruit. A favorite fish dish is tilapia dipped in egg whites, then flour, then crushed pecans, and cooked in a little olive oil.
  • Eliminate ice cream and butter. Use butter or margarine substitutes containing plant sterols.
  • Read nutrition labels on purchased foods. Avoid products containing excess sodium, sugar, or fat.
  • Get more exercise. "We try to walk every day-together, of course," Bob says.
