Depression and heart disease

How Is Depression Treated?

A complete physical exam is recommended to rule out other medical conditions that can cause the same symptoms as depression. A psychiatrist should complete an evaluation of symptoms and mental status to diagnosis the problem. With the proper care, most people with depression can overcome it.

Treatment varies depending on the severity and type of depression. Options could include:

  • Antidepressants to address the symptoms quickly, although the full impact may not be felt
    for a few months
  • Talk therapy (psychotherapy) to learn to deal with troubling issues

These additional self-care steps may help you manage your depression:

  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Exercise.
  • Practice relaxation techniques.
  • Follow a nutritious diet.
  • Avoid alcohol and illegal drugs.
  • Engage in social activities.
  • Let friends and family help you.
