Choosing Foods with Phytosterols
Q: My doctor said to lower my cholesterol I should eat foods with phytosterols. Many products have phytosterols; which ones do I choose?
A: Phytosterols are plant compounds that help keep cholesterol from being absorbed by the body. There are small amounts of phytosterols in fruits, vegetables, and nuts, but to really see a benefit you need the large amounts found in foods fortified with phytosterols.
When choosing fortified foods, pick nutritious ones, such as orange juice and yogurt. Or substitute Benecol spread with phytosterols for margarine. If you add a fortified food, such as a granola bar, take out a snack or you’ll end up eating extra calories.
