6 ways to prevent heart disease

By Doug Donaldson

Preventing heart disease involves a total plan for life. Nieca Goldberg, M.D., suggests that women see their doctors for complete assessments at an early age to develop a heart-health plan. Here are more recommendations from Goldberg:

1. If you smoke, stop now. Smoking increases a woman’s risk of heart disease and heart attack.

2. Reduce stress levels. Meditate; do deep breathing exercises. Take time to be still and be mindful.

3. Get moving, whether you walk, run, or take an exercise class.

4. Eat a healthful diet including fruits, vegetables, fiber, and lean protein.

5. Know your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers.

6. Take a low-dose aspirin once a day to lower your risk of stroke, or to reduce the chance of a second heart attack if you’ve already had one.
