Sleep and Heart Health

Your Endocrine System During Sleep

Normal Sleep: The Endocrine System's Reaction
Deep sleep triggers the release of growth hormone, which fuels growth in children and helps build muscle mass and repair cells in kids and adults. During sleep, the body also increases production of leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone, and decreases production of ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone.

Disturbed Sleep: The Endocrine System's Reaction
Decreased deep sleep in men has been associated with reduced production of growth hormone, which plays a key role in controlling the body's proportion of muscle and fat.
