6 Ways Pets Help Your Heart

2 of 7

2. The Benefits of Horses

As any horse lover knows, there’s a special peace when you’re on a horse’s back. “Horses provide a strong social support to people, and that has a therapeutic effect on your health,” says Alan Beck, director for the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University. Horseback riding and caring for a horse (mucking out stables and lifting hay bales) also provides a physical workout.

Get started: Check with local stables for horseback riding classes, sign up for a trail ride, or volunteer at a local riding therapy facility. For more information, visit the American Hippotherapy Association.
