6 Ways Pets Help Your Heart

4 of 7

4. Funny Felines

Your cat may act dignified most of the time, but get her around a bunch of feathers tied to a string and she’ll cut loose, acting like a crazed kitten again. It’s fun for her—and hysterical to watch.

Researcher Michael Miller, M.D., director of the Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, found that laughing improves the health of the heart’s lining—basically, the more you laugh, the healthier your heart becomes. Stress floats away when you’re giggling and guffawing.

Get started: Take a shoebox, drop a couple of table tennis balls inside, seal it, and cut out some paw-size holes. Your cat will love peeking and poking inside. Another idea: Place several dry beans in a film canister (glue on the top) for her to whack around.
