The Healing Benefits of Laughter
Ready, Set, Laugh!
Getting together to laugh for health is serious business for Madan Kataria, M.D. who established Hasya Yoga (hasya is the Sanskrit word for laughter) in 1995. Now there are about 5,000 laughter clubs worldwide with 200 clubs in the United States.
To locate a laughter yoga club near you, visit www.laughteryoga.org or www.laughteryoga.us. In the meantime, try some of these poses on your own:
- Start your laughter engine: Imagine a key turning in your head, and start your laughter engine with four short laughs, then rev it up.
- Hot soup laughter: Imagine you are holding a bowl of soup and you take a sip, but it's too ha-ha-hot! Laugh short "hot" laughs.
- Lion laughter: Stick out your tongue as far as you can, put your hands next to your face as if you are clawing, and let your laughter roar out.
