Have a conversation with your doctor before you travel. A nice long getaway may mean you'll need to fill two prescriptions at once. National pharmacies may have a database so you're able to refill at your destination if necessary.
"I always recommend that you bring your medication in the prescription bottle that has your name and the name of the medication," says Holly Novak, M.D., director of prevention at Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants in Springfield, Illinois. This can help if there are questions at a security checkpoint or if you need to get a refill mid-trip.
Take a few minutes to look up the generic name and active ingredient in your prescriptions. If you need a refill while abroad, the medicines may have a different name. There are many online resources to find the generic name, including RxList.com.
Tip: Keep your medications out of your car's trunk, glove compartment, or near a window where they may overheat.
