the vacation cure
kick back and enjoy
A vacation is a chance to unwind and recharge. Having fun, taking time for friends and family, catching up on sleep, and exercising are boons for lowered stress and anxiety levels and an increased sense of well-being. Your vacation can even jump-start a workout routine and healthier diet. Do your sightseeing on foot instead of hopping into a car or taxi. Walking is not only a great way to get to know a place, it’s calming and promotes mental clarity.
The same can be said of biking, so why not bond with the family by exploring your surroundings on a group ride? Check out the hotel gym. Take advantage of the classes offered in yoga or pilates. Or ignore the workout facility and hunt for a hammock. This is your vacation.
For a true getaway, leave your laptop and cell phone at home. But if you must check in with the office, schedule a half hour at the beginning or end of the day to do so. When your time is up, step away from the phone. Some couples implement a no-talking-about-work rule while vacationing—an effective way to keep worry in check.
If your hotel has a concierge service, use it. Let the concierge dig up numbers and place calls to restaurants, theaters, and tour agencies on your behalf. He or she will be glad to help, and you’ll have all the more time to do things you actually enjoy.
The ultimate ticket to stress-free traveling is to be flexible. When the room isn’t ready or the street you’ve wandered onto isn’t on your map, your laid-back attitude is sure to be contagious with your traveling companions.
