Supplements: Use a Dose of Caution
What might work
What to Avoid
Consumers should not take excessive amounts of single nutrients. The ACCF does not recommend the following:
- Vitamin C, more than 2,000 mg a day (Institute of Medicine (IOM)/National Academy of Science (NAS) upper level for adults 19 years and older).
- Vitamin E supplements, more than 1,000 mg a day (IOM/NAS upper level for adults).
- Beta-carotene, single supplements—not advisable for the general population; no benefit for cardiovascular disease.
- Policosanol, a sugar cane extract once thought to be useful in lowering cholesterol; it is no more effective than a placebo, according to a May 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
