The Cooking Cardiologist

heart-smart grilling recipes

Caramelized Onion Pizza
Pita bread makes a no-fuss base for an all-veggie pizza that takes on a smoky flavor when cooked on the grill. Whole wheat pita bread is hearty, but other varieties also work well, including sourdough or gluten-free.

Gorgeous George Burger
This burger is named after George Gordon, owner of Gwyn's High Alpine Restaurant in Snowmass, Colorado, a favorite of Dr. Richard Collins, The Cooking Cardiologist. The restaurant serves up a grilled burger topped with pineapple and bacon that Dr. Collins modified slightly.

Grilled Lemon Chicken
Instead of using oil to keep chicken moist while cooking, Dr. Richard Collins prefers using an oil-free marinade or spritzing the food with broth, water, or juice.

Grilled Summertime Vegetables
Any fresh summer vegetables are great when grilled. Use the ones below or create your own combinations.

Healthy Caesar Salad with Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
The dressing for traditional Caesar salad has approximately 160 calories and 16 grams of fat in a serving (about 2 tablespoons). In The Cooking Cardiologist’s version there are 17 calories and virtually no fat.

Seared Nectarines with Angel Food Cake
Fat-free angel food cake gets a crisp-toasty surface when grilled. Combined it with grilled fruit, a few fresh berries, and a drizzle of honey, and you create a summer-fresh dessert that doesn’t have fat.
