four heart makeovers: before and after

3 of 4

don carrier

Diet tip: I don’t pig out on any one food anymore. If I want cake, then I wait for my birthday. If I want a cold beer, then I have a cold beer. If I want ice cream, then I get soy ice cream. If I have a sweet tooth attack, then I have a piece of dark chocolate.

Fitness routine: Treadmill and weight machines for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, three to four times a week. I never use elevators, always the stairs.

Stress relief: Playing billiards, practicing yoga, and taking long walks with my dog.

Sample menu:
Breakfast
Oatmeal cooked with papaya and cranberries and a whole wheat English muffin with pumpkin jam.

Lunch
Vegetable fried rice and two small tangerines.

Dinner
Whole wheat penne pasta with crushed tomatoes, garlic, a small amount of onions, and rapini, broccoli, or mustard greens; mixed greens salad with crushed walnuts, raisins, tomatoes, and cucumbers; and vanilla soy ice cream topped with fresh berries.

Snacks
Fresh fruit and/or baked, lightly salted corn chips that have no oil or flavorings.

Throughout the day
Lots of water or tea.
