Knowledge is power, according to First Lady Laura Bush. Add these tips to your priority list to help keep heart disease at bay.
- Check with your doctor for routine screenings. Know your blood pressure and cholesterol level numbers.
- If weight is an issue, begin dealing with it; seek professional help, if necessary.
- Stop smoking.
- Start moving. Exercise at least 30 minutes daily.
- Get a copy of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ book A Healthier You (Office of Disease Prevention and Health, 2005). Based on the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the book includes advice on eating balanced meals, tips on physical activity, worksheets to track your progress, and recipes to try. It’s available at large department stores such as Target and Wal-Mart and can be ordered online here.
- Download NHLBI’s Your Guide to Better Health booklet series or order the booklets. The series includes “Your Guide to Physical Activity and Your Heart,” “Your Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure With DASH,” “Your Guide to a Healthy Heart,” “Your Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol With TLC,” and “Your Guide to Living Well With Heart Disease.”
