meet the doctors
Sharonne Hayes, M.D., directs the Women’s Heart Clinic and is an associate professor of medicine and cardiovascular diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She helped develop the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Heart Truth campaign, and co-authored the American Heart Association’s prevention guidelines for women. With WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, she directs an annual symposium to train women with heart disease as advocates and educators. She co-produced the Emmy-nominated PBS show Call to Action: Women and Heart Disease. Sharonne enjoys cooking vegetarian and ethnic meals for her family and maintains her cardiovascular health by taking the stairs, parking far from the door, and trying to do cardio and strength workouts most days of the week.
David Hayes, M.D., chairman of the Cardiovascular Division and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, specializes in cardiac pacing and defibrillation and nuclear cardiology. David has edited and authored several textbooks and scholarly publications. He has received honors and awards for his excellence in clinical practice, academic achievement, and leadership. He makes it a priority to make time for his children and himself. His own stress-management techniques include playing piano and singing in ensembles. He also keeps his heart healthy by eating a Mediterranean-style, vegetarian diet; riding his bike; and enjoying an occasional glass of wine.
