High Blood Pressure Risk Factors
By Doug Donaldson
Hypertension affects men, women, and even children. About half of the people suffering from high blood pressure are women. Also, certain ethnic groups are more at risk than others. Lifestyle choices affect blood pressure as well. Your risk may be increased if you:
- Are older than 60
- Drink alcohol regularly
- Are overweight
- Exercise less than 30 minutes three times a week
- Have high cholesterol
- Have family members with high blood pressure
- Are African-American, especially a woman
- Take oral birth-control pills
- Are postmenopausal
