Know Your Numbers

High cholesterol adds to your risk of getting heart disease.
LDL—This is “bad” cholesterol. The lower the LDL number (less than 100) the better.
HDL—“Good” cholesterol appears to protect you against heart attacks. The higher the HDL number the lower the risk.
- Total cholesterol
- Best: 200 mg/dL and lower
- Borderline: 200–239 mg/dL
- High: 240 mg/dL and up
- LDL cholesterol
- Best: 100 mg/dL and lower
- Borderline: 100–129 mg/dL
- High: 130 mg/dL and up
- HDL cholesterol
- Best: 60 mg/dL and up
- Borderline: 40–59 mg/dL
- Low: 40 mg/d and lower
- Triglycerides
- Best: 150 mg/dL and lower
- Borderline: 150–199 mg/dL
- High: 200 mg/dL and up
