Manage Depression: Protect Your Heart

Depression Symptoms

Many people are depressed and don't realize it.

Depression symptoms include:

  • A deep feeling of sadness and emptiness
  • Sleep problems—insomnia or oversleeping
  • Change in appetite, leading to weight gain or loss
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Crying easily or for no reason
  • Low self-esteem
  • Poor concentration, difficulty making decisions
  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Withdrawing from or lack of pleasure in activities
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, and hopelessness
  • Suicidal thoughts

If you think you may be depressed, speak to your significant other or a close friend and ask if he or she thinks you seem down, "Just like you'd show someone a rash and ask, 'Has this gotten bigger?'" Stein says.

Don’t be afraid to talk with your doctor if you feel you might be experiencing symptoms of depression.
